A Poem for Grandad -By Ella Depledge

A Poem for Grandad:

The love we have for Grandad,
Will never fade away.
We’ll think of him,
Every single day.

Memories are forever,
Whether laughter or of tears.
We will treasure and re-tell them,
Over the coming years.

We’ll walk into the flat,
And see his empty chair.
But remember him watching,
Only Fools and Horses sitting there.

A phrase of yours always was,
A messy child is a happy child.
So I used to take this literally,
And go quite wild.

Then out came my expression,
I’m busy, I’m busy all day.
This always made you laugh,
So I’d get my own way.

You were an extra special Grandad,
Always there for me.
But even more so after Mummy died,
I’m sure you’ll all agree.

Part Grandad, part parent, part friend,
Big smile when picking me up from school.
I especially loved this on a Friday,
As sweeties from the shop was a rule.

Once you fell off a ladder at our house,
But didn’t want to be late.
So walked a mile to my school,
With broken ribs and your face in a state.

I’ll never forget our stories we made up,
At the castle in Oxleas wood.
Of the princess captured by the witch,
But in the end it was always good.

You’d take me to McDonald’s,
But pretend you couldn’t see it.
I always knew you were joking,
But it’d have me in a laughing fit.

We loved the cinema,
And had so many trips out together.
We’d always laugh at Haha Road,
I think I will forever.

I especially loved Kew Gardens,
You, Nanny and I.
You amazed me with your knowledge,
That you could always apply.

Everytime you went into hospital,
You became even more amusing.
And you never complained,
Which I think the nurses found confusing.

Thank you Grandad,
For everything you did for me.
I can never repay you,
But I will make you proud, you’ll see.

The world is now a little bit darker,
Without you and your laugh in it.
Other than at night,
When your star is the brightest lit.

I’ll think of you every single day,
Either with a tear or a smile.
And I’ll remember it’s not goodbye forever,
Just for a while.

So sleep tight Grandad,
All is tickety-boo.
I love you so much,
And please say hi to Mummy for me too.
